Is MBA overrated?

This is a very thought provoking article from Business week. The gist of the article is that an MBA degree from a top10 school doesn't guarantee a spot in the stratosphere . To reach such echelons requires hard work, time and effort. Some keys stats were:
A) Only 1/3 of the top exec at S&P 500 are MBA
B) And 2/3 of these guys got executive MBA

But an interesting point in favor of MBA was that in general people with MBA degree took home 19% more salary than their non MBA peers. Learnt a lesson today : While MBA can only open the door, to reach the stars would still need lots of hardwork.

I think the obvious flaw in the businessweek analysis is that they limit their pool to Fortune 100 companies and that current execs are people who would have done their MBAs in the late 70s when it was considerably different (and less popular) Still gives one pause, though.

I am too a student of MBA (Univ of Strathclyde, Glasgow, UK)

I agree that the MBA qualification now has become a basic requirement to be considered for senior management roles...nothing special. ...and at least in the UK, from a job perspective, all that matters is your pre-mba experience.

All the very best.

Thanks for the link. Interesting article. But too much of statistics in there..makes me cynical of its arguments.

However, I agree with your summary.(While MBA can only open the door, to reach the stars would still need lots of hardwork.)

Hence my choosing of Haas over Wharton.Though MBA helps catapult one's career, he still needs to work hard to earn it. Thanks for stopping by my blog and Ross is definetely good choice. I am sorry that I won't get to do MAP at Ross :(
