Selling a Bschool
I am really amazed by how aggressively the bschools try to sell themselves. Ross, for instance, has contacted me in four different ways in the last month to ensure that I join them. Well I have already made my mind about Ann Arbor but still it feels good to be valued like this.
Firstly, I received the call from the admission director announcing my admit. Then there was that congratulatory email with "hail to the victors" music. If that was not enough, the admissions folder was very nice and uplifting. Within weeks of receiving the folder, I was contacted by a current student to ensure all my questions about student life at Ross are answered. Then the Indian student club at Ross sent out a welcome email. Last but not the least, this weekend I got a call from an alumni in the area. He is a director with HP and came across as a very helping, down to earth person. He had read my resume and knew my back ground. And we chatted for some time about life after Ross and what the job prospects are in my own local area. I am already making new contacts and I am loving it. This is really a nice sales strategy and I am completely bought into the idea of attenting Ross.
I am wondering if other schools are also this aggressive. Or is Ross just trying to make a mark here? Do other schools also try to sell you all dimensions of student life? Is there some thing else that Ross is not doing? Wow I really can't think of some thing else.
For those who are still waiting to hear from their dream schools, trust me the wait is worth it.
Can't wait to attend the welcome week in April now. Go Blue!

Funny, I just made a similar post. Here is my "show me the love" timeline:
- no call when admitted, just email
- call from alumni in the area I want to pursue post MBA. SUPER helpful & we stay in touch
- several congrats mass emails about open house, clubs, conferences
- personal email from Dean of admissions
- phone call from current student
i think many schools do this, but the phenomena tends to fizzle out as you go up the pyramid, and reach the Harvard summit.
I mock-interviewed with a Ross R1 admit this last week(prepping for Chi), and he was also telling me so many good things abt AA. I hope I get lucky on the 15th :)
I think most schools do it. They actually have someone in charge of co-ordinating all the calls to admitted students. I've received calls from 3 different current students and 2 alumni from Duke and 2 current students from Darden.
I think there are 3 things at play here. An attempt to increase yield by increasing the feel good factor, a genuine desire to welcome incoming students and make them feel like a part of the community and finally, maybe an attempt to try to figure out who is leaning towards not attending.
The weightage of each of these factors behind the calls would probably vary depending on the school culture and also where it sees itself in the food chain.
i will add to that. from michigan bloggers union :-) (it doesnt exist i made it up) . welcome to michigan. if you have any doubts concerns questions comments on life @ bschool/careers etc. please feel free to drop a line.
More than glad to help.
sorry to hear about your elbow! In the end, it was all worth it right?
